Sanjeev kumar was from the same genre of acting school that Moti lal, Balraj Sahani, Pran, Nasseruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor and Paresh Rawal are. They are all natural actors and have given their best performances while working according to the requirement of the scripts.
Sanjeev kumar born as Hari Bhai Jariwala in Gujarat in the year 1938, went upon becoming a prominent actor in Indian cinema. He remained bachelor all his life and died due to heart ailment in the year 1985. He won National awards for best acting for the films, Dastak and Koshish. He received the Filmfare awards thrice with overall number of nominations being fourteen. His most popular films are Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay , Aandhi, Mausam, Manchali, Trishul, Devta, Angoor, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Naya Din Nayi Raat, Naukar,Etc.,
He started his carrier in 1960 but got break as a hero with the film Nishana in 1965, a B-grade movie. However he got recognisation through film Sangarsh where he was pitted against the famous Dilip kumar in 1968. Then with 1970’s Khilona in which he played the role of a dejected, mentally unstable lover, he established himself as a successful actor. Then again he gave powerful performance in Dastak. The role of deaf and dumb “Hari” in the film Koshish and hand-less “Thakur” in Sholay, where he largely emoted through his eyes showed his prowess. The great director Satyajit Ray casted him in his classic Shatranj ke khiladi as chess-obessed “Mirza” in 1977. Sanjeev Kumar showed his versatility with Naya Din Nayi Raat by playing nine different characters in the movie.
On one hand he mastered the role of physical challenged characters and on the other hand he played romantic and comical roles in Manchali, Angoor, Pati Patni Aur Woh,etc., action oriented films like Devta, Aakramaan, Nishaan, Raja Aur Runk, etc., horror like Jaani Dushman in which he played the role of evil possessed man.
Sanjeev Kumar’s ability to portray difficult roles, irrespective of the age or the type of character with ease made him the most versatile actor of all times. He was always ready to take the challenge to do unconventional roles, that’s why he was able to work with all the best directors of his time. He was always ready to go for physical or physiological changes as per the requirements of scripts. He mastered all the genre of cinema like Drama, Action, Adventure, Tragedy, War, Classic, Comedy, Romantic and Horror. Though he played many elderly roles in his films but his contribution to the cinema is timeless and will be cherished in the hearts of all cine lovers.
